Kali ka bharosa taju Govinda Radhey,
jane kal tera kali aane hi na dey.
The Vedas say,
Na shva shvah upaseeta ko hi purushasya shvo
veda.
“Oh souls! Do not procrastinate until tomorrow!” People say, “I will
practice devotion, definitely – but I’ll start tomorrow.” Who knows if you will
live to see tomorrow?
Once when Yudhishthir was king, he was approached by a brahman who said, “I
need to marry my daughter. Please give me 10 gold coins.” Yudhishthir said,
“Today I’m busy today with all these affairs of state. Come back tomorrow.” The
brahman left disappointed. Bheemsen had overheard this conversation and it made
him feel very bad. So without saying anything to Yudhishthir, Bheemsen called the prime
minister and told him to announce throughout the kingdom that today was a day
of great joy and celebration. No one had the courage to ask him exactly what
was so joyful about today. So, all the citizens made big preparations and
decorated everywhere.
When Yudhishthir saw all this he wondered, “What is going on? Today isn’t
Janmashtami or Ramnaumi.” He called his prime minister, “What is happening
today?” He said, “Your highness, your brother gave the order for us to do
this.” Yudhisthira then called Bheemsen, “What’s happening?” He said, “Brother,
today is the most happy day.” “So, what is it? Tell me!” Bheemsen said, “You
have defeated death!” Yudhishthir was puzzled, “Are you in your right mind? No
one can defeat death.”
Even the ones who truly can defeat death operate according to death’s
rules. When supreme God descends on this earth, He comes for a prescribed
period of time. When this comes to an end, He is approached humbly by Yamaraj
who requests, “My Lord, Your time has ended. I have come to remind You.” Even
the greatest God realised Saints must go at their prescribed time. They may go
with great pomp and circumstance or be transported by a celestial vehicle, but
go they must. They don’t violate God’s law. After hearing this, Yudhishthir accepted his mistake. Bheemsen said, “You
could have asked me to give the brahman the gold coins. Why did you say, ‘Come
tomorrow’? Who knows if you might die or he might die in the meantime?” So, You all have heard accounts of a person going to sleep at 9 p.m. and
unexpectedly passing away. He wasn’t sick or old. In fact, he appeared
completely healthy. His wife, who was sleeping next to him, had no idea that he
died. They had just made big plans, “Tomorrow we’re going to do this and that!”
At 10 p.m. Yamaraj came calling and said, “Mister, your time is up. Let’s
go.” “Wait! Just let me tell someone I’m going… !” “No, now there’s no time.”
