Nature of the Material World....

Let us now reflect on whether there actually is happiness in any material object or not. You may say that you experience happiness from your wealth, spouse, children and so on. Then how can your intellect possibly accept the fact that there is no true happiness in the world? However, if you seriously reflect upon this, the intellect will definitely changes its decision. Now, which object is a source of happiness to you? If any object contains happiness, then everyone should receive happiness from it. Also, that happiness should be permanent and not followed by misery. However, neither of these conditions is fulfilled by anything material. Take liquor for instance. A drunkard experiences happiness at the very mention of liquor and definitely becomes happier when he actually drinks it. But the same liquor is a source of displeasure to a teetotaller. so the question is does liquor contain the happiness that is experienced by the alcoholic, or does it contain the revulsion experienced by the non-drinker? You may object saying that the non-drinker has never experienced the taste of liquor. If he were to actually taste it, he would also experience the same happiness as that experienced by the alcoholic. However, such an objection is naive. if that staunch teetotaller were made to drink alcohol, he would probably feel sick and be miserable the rest of his life.

There is one important truth that requires understanding. If happiness isn't experienced from any object, than sorrow won't be experienced from that object, either. The experience of sorrow corresponds to the experience of happiness. Observe, when Umesh died, his wife experienced the greatest sorrow; less then her grief was her son's grief; less then the son's grief was the friend's grief, and the one who felt the least grief was the servant. The neighbour, on the other hand was indifferent, while the debtor experienced happiness. Now, it is evident that when a person experiences a certain degree of happiness from an object or peron, he is bound to experience sorrow in the same proportion when separated from that object or person. In reality, there is no sorrow in any object. Whatever we experience is the result of the result of our own beliefs.

The second truth with regard to wordly happiness is that the happiness we experience from any object constantly diminishes. For example, a mother has been crying for two days in the grief of separation from her lost son. she is desperate to find him so that she could run and embrace him to her heart's content. Now, suppose he is found. She run to him crying, "My son, my son," and embraces him very tightly, experiencing great joy. when she hugs him for the econd time, the joy is less then what she experienced the first time. The third time, it is much less then the second time and when she embraces him for the tenth time, she experiences neither joy nor sorrow. The eleventh time, she says to her son, "Go out and play." But her son wants to remain in her lap. Now the mother begins to experience unhappines because of his stubborn insistence. she shouts at him in irritation, "Are you a special child that I should contantly keep you in my lap? Leave me alone now because I have plenty of other things to do."

You must have eaten chocolates. When you ate the first chocolate you experienced great pleasure, on eating the second, the pleasure was less, on the third, even lesser. On eating the tenth, you experienced neither pleasure nor displeasure and on the fifteenth you protested, "please, I can't eat another one. I feel sick." Now, if there was pleasure in chocolates or in any other food or object, why is there this constant abatement in the pleasure experienced and then eventually displeasure? Obviously our experience is a deception. It is merely a result of our own imagination, a fabrication of the mind.

when you are thirsty you love water, but not when your thirst is quenched. A lustful man longs for a woman, but when that lustful craving is absent, that same woman becomes burdensome. This fact is experienced by everyone, but no one actually bothers to reflect upon it. No one bothers to analyze the delusive nature of material happiness. It is obvious that there is not a trace of happiness in any object in the world. whatever we experience is the deceptive reult of our own imagiination. Observe, people think there is happiness in beauty, but our own experience is contrary to this. Suppose a child who is very ugly gets lot in a fair. His mother files a report at the police station. there she is shown a number of children who were found wandering about alone at the fair. she looks at them one by one, but experiences no joy because her ugly, squint-eyed son i not among them. Now, the other children present at the police station were better-looking then her son, but she did not experience any happiness from them. However ugly her son was, he alone was her source of joy.

Liquor smells disgusting to a teetotaller and is immensely pleasurable to an alcoholic. Onions and garlic smell disgusting to one man and aromatic to another. The worm that lives in garbage would be repulsed or even die if surrounded by fragrant perfume. In other words, beauty, fragrance, etc. do not contain happiness. However, if someone repeatedly thinks of a particular object to be a source of happiness. he becomes attached to it.

One more point needs to be noted. There is definitely an experience of momentary happiness when a desire is fulfilled, but it is immdiately followed by greed for more. One who acquires a million rupees is engaged in finding the ways and means to acquire two million. Thus the vicious cycle of planning and implementation of the plan follows. If the desire is not fulfilled, anger aries. Every desire is either fulfilled or unfulfilled, so either anger or greed is bound to follow the desire. Thus, pain inevitably follows the appearance of any desire. If you say that one should abstain from desires, it is not possible. The reason is that unless and until we attain Divine Bliss, the emergence of desires is natural. No one can put an end to them...

Surrender....

mana krama vachana chhamri chaturai bhajatahim kripa karahim raghurai

(Ramayana)

The Ramayana states, "It is only through complete surrender, that one can attain Grace and be liberated from the bondage of Maya." All this scriptural evidence implies that we must surrender to god. God's Grace is dependent upon surrender. All those souls who surrendered to him, attained their supreme ultimate goal of Divine Bliss, whereas those who chose not to, have remained deprived of His Grace revolving in the 8.4 million species of life governed by time, destiny, their own natures and the three modes of maya, the gunas.

Phirata sada maya kara prera, kala karma svabhava guna ghera

(Ramayana)

Now a quetion likely to arie is that, the act of doing something in order to attain God's Grace, is like a wordly business transaction of give and take. but to hold such a view is naive, because surrender actually means coming to a state of doing nothing. As long as a newborn baby does nothing, the mother does everything foe it. when the child starts doing something, the mother lessens her responsibilities to the same extent. when the child begins to do everything, then the mother does nothing. This example fully explains what surrender is. As long as we suffer from the ego of being doers, we will remain bound by the fruit of our actions because we will be considered the doers of our actions. The moment the feeling of doership ends, we will become 'non-doers' and God will personally take care of all our needs and protect whatever we have for eternity.

tesham nityabhiyuktanam yogakshemam vahamyaham

(Gita 9.22)

Therefore, if by surrender i.e. doing nothing, one attain freedom from maya, freedom from its three modes, gunas, the three types of consequences of actions, trikarma, the three afflictions, tritapa, the five sheaths, panchakosha. etc. and simultaneously attains Supreme Bliss and Everlasting Peace, what greater Grace could there possibly be?

If we had done something and received God's Grace in return an objection could have been raised that we had to do something to receive His Grace. But since we attain everything just by doing nothing i.e. complete surrender, this is only His Causeless Mercy. what effort is required of us in letting go off everything?

Understand this with an example: As long as a bird has a piece of food in its beak, it is noisily pursued by other birds and does not get a momen's peace. The moment the bird lets go off the piece of food, it attains peace immediately because the other birds now leave it alone. However, even if one lets go off everything and surrenders to God, it cannot be the price, for His Grace. This is because what God gives is divine, unlimited and perfect, and what we let go off is material, limited and defective. Besides, of what ue are material things to God?

Let us look at an example from the Mahabharata. Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas was being insulted openly in court by being stripped off her clothing by Duhshasana. Initially, Draupadi had faith that her mighty husbands would save her. when they did not respond to her entreatie, she turned to the elders in the assembly - Dronacharya, Kripacharya, Vidura, Bhishma, etc. who were authorities on religious principles. when she saw no help coming from them either, she tried to protect herself and clenched her sari between her teeth. Lord Krishna still did not come to her help. when Duhshasana pulled her sari with a jerk, she lost hold of it, and was totally helpless. now, she surrendered herself completely to Lord Krishna. In other words, she came to a state of doing nothing. It was only when she ceased to expect protection from elsewhere, that she was protected by Him. The Lord states in the Gita,

Sarvadharman parityajya mamekam sharanam vraja

(Gita 18.66)

" Abandon all kinds of righteous and unrighteous actions and surrender to Me, then I will forgive all your sins of uncountable past lifetimes." God who acts as a judge dispensing justice for all becomes merciful for those who surrender to Him. In the material world, If a criminal surrenders to the law, the court still punishes him for his past crimes. However, God is so merciful, the moment a soul surrenders to Him completely, He forgives him i.e. He liberates him from the bondage of countless lifetimes of good and bad deeds and also betows the Ultimates Bliss upon that soul. In addition, He takes care of his needs and protect whatever he has for eternity. Is this not Causeless Grace? Even an ignornant person will agree to this. Now this should put an end to the question whether God requires 'something' as a price in return for His Grace.

If a cloth merchant upplies a dress free of cost for your daughter's wedding, he is being really kind. If a washerman were to clean your clothes and not charge you for it, we would say that he has done you a favour, even though the clothes could become dirty again. when God purifies your mind, it never becomes impure again. when a woman marries, she automatically becomes an equal owner of her husband's property. Similarly, when you surrender to God, you automatically acquire His unlimited Knowledge, Bliss and Love...

O Shyam Sunder....

O Shyam Sunder! You appear or not, but please increase the intensity of my thirst to meet you. I do not insist to come inot my view, yet I earnestly request You to awake my mind with an augmenting glamour of seeing you. If, seeing me poorly appete...nt to see You, makes You happy, let this longing be ever increasing for Your full contentment. Love me, or let me die. I will not stop following You even for a fraction of a second. O divine couple! Develop my attachment for both of you alone and uproot it from the rest of the world. O my Lord! How can I please you, since I am absolutely deprived of love? Hence, at least make me rich with the wealth of divine love. Enable me to drink such an intoxicant of divine love, which could make me desire you alone from each and every fiber of my being. O Radhe & Krishna! I wish to be extremely restless without seeing you just like a fish without water. You have innumerable devotees, but, I do not have anyone as my own except You. Hence, do not forget me please. O Govind! O Radhe! Enable me to attain divine love by my Guru, through the power of Your grace. Please keep me far away from the association of those, who do not love You. My Lord! I beg to fulfil my earnest desire of being the foot dust of those devotees, who really love You. O Govind & Radhe! Sacrifice me please to the sacred feet of those venerable devotees, who have made their hearts, a permanent residence for both of You. In fact, there is no delinquency of the benefactor, rather my vassal of heart is dirty, Hence, my Lord! make it a proper vassal to receive Your grace.

Although I sing Your holy name all the time, yet the feeling of love never arises in my heart. Hence, O Almighty Lord! Please turn it out with Your special power. I sing the glories of Your names, forms and divine pastimes, but my heart is so stiff, it does not melt out of love at all. You are Almighty, hence You move it please! I commit the greatest sin 'namaparadh' again and again. I request You to save me from committing these offences. First of all I request you to let me drink just a drop of nectar of divine love to make me fond of drinking it. O my beloved divine couple! I want you to give me a disease of crying with an earnest desire of achieving divine love. I wish to chant your name with each and every breath with a perfect comprehension that there is no difference at all between you and your name. O Radherani! O Shyamsunder! Fascinate my mind with the help of the rasik saints in such a wonderful magical way, that I instantly start singing 'Radhe Radhe' continuously, being engrossed in divine thoughts

Spiritual Knowledge...

Spiritual Knowledge

We may have spent years and years reading the Vedas, the Shastras, and the Holy Scriptures and yet we have failed to understand them properly with the result that we are not able to take any decision about what is right and what is wrong. we are only confused by a plethora of thoughts, ideas and opinions, sometimes seemingly self-contradictory contained in them and also those propounded by great scholars and philosophers like Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya, Nimbarkacharya and many others. This state of confusion which has continued from time immemorial was so easily resolved by our great spiritual master, Jagadguru Shri Kripaluji Maharaj, who explained to us their implied sense and guided us towards our goal. We ordinary mortals could not do it our own in millions of years, rather in an infinite number of lifetimes. He i kind enough to give us the SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE that helped us to realize the supreme truth. Thus, we are saved of a hard work. Or else we would go on reading books after books, beat our brains out, nurture doubts, and do wrong (guided by our own theoretical understanding of the text). It i because our intellect is under the influence of maya. we will make our confusion worse confounded if we try to realize God merely by reading our scriptures.

Shruti purana bahu kaheu upai, chhutai na adhika adhika arujhai
(Ramayana)

Without having gained the spiritual knowledge, we cannot even perform any devotional practice. God realization i a far cry. Instead, we would indulg in fallacious reasoning with our mind full of doubts and apprehensions and would spend our entire life in this meaningless pursuit. we would let this human body go waste.

The devotional practice that we would perform would not benefit us because of our lack of proper or adequate knowledge. we would only be going around with external acts of going japa (repetition of some deity's name or vedic hymns), pattha (recitation of passages from scriptures), puja (ritualistic worship), and going on pilgrimage. So giving the spiritual knowledge is a great grace of the guru. The knowledge which we could not gain despite having made all efforts in infinite number of lifetimes, the same knowledge was so easily given to u our Guru.
Now it is our duty to repeatdly contemplete on that knowledge to fully assimilate it and make practical application of that. The level of understsnding that knowledge and alo of applyinf that knoledge in life differ from person to person. some people are not that careful, while some did make some serious attempt. but there are some who have with full dediciation understood and accepted it and surrendered fully to the Guru. The saints showered hi grace causelessly on all by giving them that knowledge, irrespective of how much dedicated one is. Some of them may be totally attached to the world and material possession, others may have lss attachment, in case of some others, the degree of attachment may be further less and someone of them may be compltely detached all the time thinking of attaining the goal. It would be foolish to think that the person who is concentrating round the clock on attaining his goal will be rewarded with ome pecial grace. The grace was showered on all equally. But it i like when falls on the hot metal, it will sizzle and disappear. The same water falling on a lots leaf ill shine like a pearl. If it gets into an oyster cell, it will turn into a pearl. Thus water is falling on everything similarly and equally but it depend on the receptacle what shape will it take.

The degree of benefit will therefore depend on how much faith you have, how important or valuable is the Guru in yor estmation and how mch detached you are. It is the Saint's second big grace that he gave you the spirital knowledge...
